In the Beginning of October 2021 I Begun my photography trip heading to the south of Saudi Arabia to photograph in 3 different regions which are Jazan Region, Najran Region & AlQunfudhah city which is part of Makkah Region, but my first stop would be in Abha city in Asia Region because my wife wanted to come & visit Abha for the first time so naturally I’ve made plans to make it first things to do so I can be free for photography later, before reaching Abha I made one night stop at Bisha city before taking the mountain road through several cities like AlNamas until I reached Abha.

مع بداية شهر اكتوبر ٢٠٢١ بدأت رحلتي الفوتوغرافية متوجهاً إلى جنوب السعودية للزيارة والتصوير في ثلاث مناطق رئيسية وهي منطقة جازان ونجران ومحافظة القنفذة التابعة لمنطقة مكة المكرمة، وكانت وجهتي الأولى مدينة أبها بمنطقة عسير والسبب في ذلك أن زوجتي أرادت زيارة أبها ورؤية منتزه السحاب فـ كان الحل الوحيد هو أن تكون في أول مسار الرحلة لكي أتفرغ للتصوير في الايام اللاحقة، قبل الوصول إلى أبها قمت بالتوقف لمدة ليلة في محافظة بيشة للراحة ومن ثم انطلقت صباحاً متوجهاً إلى أبها مروراً بعدة محافظات مثل النماص وبللسمر وبللحمر، قمت بزيارة منتزه جبل ناصر بشكل سريع والذي يحتوي على مطلات جميلة للغاية.

Heading to Abha we visited AlSoudah Lookout to view the beautiful clouds there but sadly it wasn’t perfect. Next day was the weekly market in Abha which is Tuesday Market so I headed there first thing in the morning and managed to meet one of the old men I photographed before to deliver him a printed photo, in the evening I again visited AlSoudah lookout & another area too to watch the beautiful sunset with layers of mountains disappearing with the clouds.

توجهت إلى أبها وإلى مطل جبل السودة لرؤية السحاب الساحر هناك ولكن لم يحالفنا الحظ في ذلك، باليوم التالي يصادف سوق الثلاثاء الشعبي لذلك من الطبيعي أن أقوم بالتوجه له في الصباح الباكر وهناك إلتقيت بمُسن قمت بتصويره مسبقاً وللأسف كان هناك مُسن اخر أصبح لا يأتي السوق ولم أتمكن إيصال صورته مع أي أحد، في المساء قمت بزيارة مطل جبل السودة مرة اخرى وأيضاً توجهت إلى منتزه السحاب للتمتع بالغروب الساحر مع طبقات الجبال التي تختفي مع السحاب.

In Wednesday I left Abha heading for AlQunfudhah passing by AlNamas & I took AlTawhid mountain road which had a really nice view to the valley, I passed several towns until I reached my destination & the road was full beautiful trees, valleys and mountains, because of that the trip took me about 8 hours instead of 5 hours.

يوم الأربعاء غادرت أبها متوجهاً إلى بمحافظة القنفذة مروراً بمحافظة النماص وسلكت عقبة التوحيد التي كانت ذو إطلالة جميلة على الرغم من صعوبة الطريق نوعاً ما مروراً بالمجاردة وثربان وحتى وصلت إلى وجهتي وكان الطريق جميلاً متنوعاً ما بين جبال وأودية وأشجار، وبسبب ذلك استغرقت ٨ ساعات للوصول بدل من ٥ ساعات.

In the next day I headed for Thursday Market in AlQouz about 30km from AlQunfudhah and it had special homemade local stuff, also there were women who cook a famous local dish (fish cooked on wood with bread) and I can’t express how the people there were welcoming, in the evening I headed for the old areas in AlQunfudhah & I didn’t expect to see so many alley and old houses there. At Friday I visited the Friday market which wasn’t the best idea since it’s very far from the city & very small, last day I headed for Saturday Market located in Sabt AlJarah which is 40km away from the city which is the biggest weekly market in the district, the sheep market was crowded & of course there was another area for different kind of stuff to sell and lastly I managed to document a local dish in a better way, that was the last photowalk in this district before driving to Jazan Region.

باليوم التالي استيقظت صباحاً وتوجهت إلى سوق الخميس في مدينة القوز والتي تبعد عن القنفذة قرابة ٣٠ كم (بالمناسبة في كل يوم يوجد سوق شعبي أسبوعي وموقعه مختلف على مستوى المحافظة) وتميز السوق بوجود بعض المنتجات المحلية الصنع وكذلك كان هناك بعض النساء الذين يطبخون طبق الافطار اللذيذ محلياً “شعبية” وهو عبارة عن سمك مشوي على الحطب مع خبز المليفا المشهور ولا أحكي لكم عن مدى رحابة الناس هناك، بالمساء توجهت إلى الأحياء القديمة في مدينة القنفذة ولم أكن أتخيل وجود أزقة ومباني قديمة هنا ولكن من حسن الحظ لا تزال موجودة، يوم الجمعة قمت بزيارة سوق الجمعة بربيعة وكانت زيارة غير موفقة بسبب أن السوق صغير والمسافة بعيدة وباليوم الأخير توجهت إلى سبت الجارة والذي يوجد به سوق السبت الأسبوعي الاكبر بالمحافظة ووصلت هناك مبكراً على الرغم من أنها تبعد عن المدينة قرابة ٤٠ كم وكان الازدحام بالطبع عند سوق الماشية ومن ثم توجهت عند سوق البضائع والخضروات وأخيراً قمت بتوثيق طبق “شعبية” بشكل أفضل وكان ذلك ختام جولاتي في المحافظة قبل المغادرة ظهراً إلى منطقة جازان.

In Saturday noon I left AlQunfudhah taking the coastal highway road heading for Jazan Region in the south, and what special about this road it’s parallel with the beach, I arrived Abu Arish city which located almost in the center of Jazan Region which makes it a perfect place for travelers who want to explore the Region, in the next the morning I headed straight for Sunday weekly market in Ahid city which has a really big sheep & cow market.

انطلقت يوم السبت ظهراً من القنفذة على الطريق الساحلي الدولي بإتجاه منطقة جازان جنوباً، وما يميز الطريق كان قربه الشديد من الشواطيء للدرجة التي توقفت بها في نقطة معينة والبحر يبعد خطوات قليلة فقط عن الشارع السريع، وصلت مدينة أبوعريش والتي تتوسط منطقة جازان وبالتالي هي نقطة مثالية للسكن لكي يسهل الذهاب إلى أرجاء المنطقة، في صباح اليوم التالي توجهت مباشرة إلى سوق أحد المسارحة الأسبوعي والذي كان يتميز بسوق الماشية الكبير وتنوعه بين الأغنام والأبقار والابل ولكنه كان منفصلاً عن سوق البضائع والخضروات ويبعد مسافة دقائق بالسيارة عنه.

I had a good luck in the same day with meeting with one of locals who lives in AlHasher Mountains, Abu Sari Salman AlHureisi owns a farm there which has a really special lookout for the valley west of the mountain, it was 2 hour drive from Abu Arish and then he picked me up from a place in the main road to take me to the farm, I photographed him with his son Sari most of the time doing their usual routine there, also had to eat traditional lunch which is called Areeka (cooked grains, honey & dates) after that group of people came to an official visit to the farm & took advantage of documenting their visit, and then ended up spending the rest of the day in the farm. (I will publish full post & photos from this visit later)

حالفني الحظ بنفس اليوم بتواصلي مع صاحب مزرعة الهديهدة في جبال الحشر أبوساري الحريصي ورحب بي لزيارته وبالتالي توجهت مباشرة هناك حيث تبعد المسافة قرابة الساعتين نظراً لأن الطريق معظمه جبلي، بعد ذلك إلتقيت في أبو ساري وركبت معه السيارة للذهاب إلى المزرعة، قمت بتصويره مع إبنه ساري معظم الوقت وهم يقومون بروتينهم المعتاد، أيضاً تناولت الغداء بطبق شعبي مشهور وهي العريكة (عبارة عن سمن وعسل وتمر) بعد ذلك جاءت مجموعة من الأشخاص في زيارة رسمية للمزرعة واستغليت الأمر في توثيق زيارتهم وأمضيت باقي يومي هناك. The next day in the morning I headed to Monday weekly market in Samtah which was really amazing with it’s location & scenes but I only spent an hour there because of the heat & humidity even though we are in October, then I spent the rest of the morning exploring the area around with street photographer Adel AlMangari which maybe the only street photographer in Jazan, the last day which was Tuesday I headed in the morning to Fifa Mountain then in the evening I visited the old area in Jazan city for photographing the daily life. 1st photo: Abu Sari with the historical village in his farm at AlHasher Mountain. 2nd photo: Scene for the valley from Abu Sari’s farm. 3rd photo: Branch for coffee beans tree in Abu Sar’s farm. 4th photo: Cows cattle in the green open field. 5th photo: Scene of houses in Fifa Mountain. 6th photo: One house on the top of the mountain in Fifa.

اليوم التالي سوق صامطة الأسبوعي والذي كان سوقاً مبهراً ومليئاً بالمواضيع أمضيت فقط قرابة الساعة هناك بسبب الرطوبة والحرارة العالية على الرغم من كوننا في شهر اكتوبر، إلتقيت بأحد مصوري جازان وربما مصور حياة الشارع الوحيد عادل المنقري وتجولنا في بعض أرجاء المنطقة التي تملأها الأشجار الخضراء والماشية، اليوم الأخير الثلاثاء قررت التوجه لجبال فيفا صباحاً بلا هدف معين وكانت مجرد استكشاف للمناظر من على الطريق لا اكثر، وبالمساء زرت سوق القديم وجازان القديمة لتصوير وتوثيق الحياة هناك.

In Wednesday morning before sunrise I started driving towards Najran Region through the mountain road which looks a bit difficult from the map and it crosses by Asir Region, the trip takes about 5 hours but because I stopped a lot to take photos from the side road plus I rested for an hour & half I reached Najran at sunset which is something I didn’t mind at all, the fun in the road trip is the road itself.

في صباح يوم الأربعاء وقبل شروق الشمس بدأت بالقيادة بإتجاه منطقة نجران باستخدام الطريق الجبلي والذي كان يبدو صعباً بعض الشيء من الخريطة ويقطع منطقة عسير، المسافة تستغرق قرابة ٥ ساعات ولكن بسبب وقوفي المتكرر في الطريق للتصوير والتوقف للراحة لساعة ونصف في ظهران الجنوب لم أصل نجران إلا وقت المغرب وهو شيء لم أمانعه لأن متعة الرحلة في الطريق ذاته.

In the next morning I went out scouting the city and see what changed since my last visit to Najran was 3 years ago, one of the most noticeable changes was the front of the market was united in one theme that display Najran culture and they moved the famous camel market which was near the old city into a new location takes about 30 min driving, even with that I visited the famous Janabi Market, then I visited an old man from the old area which I photographed him back then twice. Next day at Friday it was a light morning so I did a quick walks around the city to make sure of the location for the camel market, in the evening I met an old friend and we went to several areas in the market and visited an old farm area to deliver printed photos.

في صباح اليوم التالي خرجت لأستكشف المدينة ورؤية ما تغير وما زال على حاله بعد اخر زيارة لنجران قبل أكثر من ٣ سنوات، أبرز هذه التغييرات هو تعديلات كثيرة في واجهة الاسواق بتوحيدها ضمن واجهة واحدة تعبر عن هوية نجران بالإضافة إلى أنه تم نقل سوق الإبل الذي كان بالقرب من السوق إلى منطقة تبعد ٣٠ دقيقة عن موقعه الأصلي، ومع ذلك قمت بالتصوير في سوق الجنابي المشهور وزيارة أحد الأشخاص الذي قمت بتصويره سابقاً مرتين في حارة أبا السعود القديمة، يوم الجمعة لم يكن هناك أي نشاط بالصباح وكانت الجولة سريعة فقط قمت بالتأكد من موقع سوق الإبل الجديد والتنزه في حي القابل جنوب المدينة وهو حي زراعي يحتوي على الكثير من بيوت الطين التي لا زالت تستخدم، وفي المساء إلتقيت بأحد الزملاء القدامى وقمنا بعمل جولة في عدة مواقع للتصوير في سوق الجنابي وسوق التمور وكذلك قمنا بزيارة حي القابل مرة اخرى لتسليم صور لأصحابها.

Saturday early morning I went to the camel market to photograph the daily auction which usually begins at dawn until 7 am after that I drove directly home to the Eastern Province and that ends my 2 weeks photography trip in the South Region of Saudi Arabia.

يوم السبت صباحاً خرجت مبكراً جداً لزيارة سوق الابل وتوثيق الحراج الذي يبدأ عادة من بعد الفجر حتى الساعة ٧ صباحاً لحقها المغادرة مباشرة والعودة إلى المنطقة الشرقية وكانت تلك ختام رحلة التصوير في جنوب السعودية التي استغرقت قرابة أسبوعين.

So in summery I did the road trip with my car lasts 14 days to the South of Saudi Arabia, I traveled more then 5000 km in highways & inside cities, visited 9 cities in 4 different Regions (Asir Region – Makkah Region – Jazan Region – Najran Region) the goal from the trip was to photograph the old areas & the weekly markets, plus delivering printed photos and lastly to document anything on the highway roads, if I did the math right this marks my 9th photography trip inside Saudi Arabia for the past 8 years (without counting the small trips to Riyadh & AlHasa) and I’m sure that what’s coming in the future will more & more of this.

لذا كمخلص كانت الرحلة البرية بسيارتي الخاصة استمرت ١٤ يوماً تجولت فيها جنوب المملكة، قطعت أكثر من ٥٠٠٠ كم في الشوارع السريعة وداخل المدن وقمت بزيارة ٩ مدن في ٤ مناطق مختلفة (منطقة عسير – منطقة مكة المكرمة – منطقة جازان – منطقة نجران) كان هدف الرحلة هو تصوير الأحياء القديمة والأسواق الشعبية الأسبوعية، بالإضافة إلى تسليم صور مطبوعة وتوثيق كل ما يصادفني في الطريق، إذا لم اخطيء بالحسبة فـ هذه هي الرحلة الفوتوغرافية التاسعة في داخل السعودية في خلال ٨ سنوات (بدون حسبة الرحلات القصيرة إلى الرياض والأحساء) والقادم اكثر واجمل.
