العم علي بن محمد آل عبدالله والمعروف بإسم بن سروان من سكان مدينة نجران جنوب السعودية يعمل في مهنة الخياطة وبالتحديد خياطة الزي النجراني التراثي الرجالي والنسائي ويقع محله الصغير بالقرب من سوق الجنابي الشعبي

Ali bin Mohammad Al Abdullah also known as Bin Sirwan from Najran city South of Saudi works as a tailor specially for the traditional clothing in Najran and his small shop is located near AlJanabi Market

امتهن العم علي هذه المهنة لأكثر من ٦٠ سنة وقد ورثها عن والده ووالدته بجانب أخواته في ذلك الوقت

Uncle Ali has worked as a tailor for over 60 years saying that he inherited this profession from his father & mother along side his sisters at that time

يقوم العم علي بحياكة الزي النجراني الرجالي والتي تسمى المزندة والمذيل وأما الزي النسائي يسمى المكممة والمعضد، الخياطة كما يصفها العم علي إما بشكل يدوي أو بإستخدام ماكينة الخياطة حيث يقوم بخياطة زي رجالي بالكامل خلال أسبوع إذا قام بالعمل بشكل يدوي بالكامل ولكنه يمكن الانتهاء منه خلال ساعات إذا استخدم الماكينة

Uncle Ali makes different kind of traditional clothing known in Najran history for both men & women and each cloth has a different name, and he describes that it can be sewed manually by a needle or by the sewing machine also adding if he used the manual way it can take up to a whole week to finish one adult traditional cloth and only needs a few hours if he used the sewing machine

يذكر العم علي أن الخياطة اليدوية عمرها أطول وجودتها أفضل لذ لا يزال عليها الطلب بشكل مستمر خصوصاً أن شهرة العم علي منتشرة بين أبناء المنطقة نظراً لتميز خياطته قديماً في التطريز بدقة عالية، لدى العم عدد من الأبناء والبنات وذكر أنه أحد أولاده يحب هذه المهنة ويقوم التعلم بشكل مستمر منه على الرغم من مجال دراسته في التمريض.

Uncle Ali mentioned that if done manually the quality & the life time of the cloth is very high that’s way they are still in demand specially because of his old reputation among the residence of Najran city in his detailed work on the cloth, Uncle Ali has one of his kids who is currently studying to be a nurse and like to learn sewing from time to time so he can inherit the profession of his family.

Hello all, in October 2021 I was in a photography trip and I visited AlJanabi Market & the date market in Najran which I published several blog posts like Day 41 – Najran Part 2 back in 2015, and here are some of the peoples who are used to come & spend time in the market and because it was in covid19 time some were still wearing masks.

مرحبا بالجميع، في أكتوبر ٢٠٢١ كنت في رحلة فوتوغرافية وقمت بزيارة سوق الجنابي الشهير وسوق التمور بالقرب منه في مدينة نجران وقمت بنشر عدة تدوينات مثل اليوم ٤١ – نجران الجزء الثاني سابقاً في عام ٢٠١٥، هنا قمت بتصوير بعض الأشخاص الذين اعتادوا المجيء وقضاء الوقت في السوق ولأن ذلك الوقت كانت لاتزال الاجراءات الوقائية ضد الجائحة مفعلة لا يزال بعضهم يرتدي الكمامة.

In my 2 days visit to AlHudaihedah village in AlHasher mountains south of Saudi Arabia I had the chance to see a young shepherd in the farm nearby.

في زيارتي التي استمرت يومين كاملين في قرية الهديهدة في جبال الحشر جنوب المملكة كانت لدي فرصة لرؤية راعي الأغنام الصغير في احدى المزارع المجاورة.

في باطن سوق العجيبة في مدينة بريدة كانت هناك ورشة صغيرة جداُ لا يتجاوز عرضها مترين وكان صاحبها هو علي محمد الطامي ابوعمر الذي اتخذ مهنة إصلاح الأجهزة الكهربائية المنزلية والهواتف منذ عقود

In the heart of the central market of Buraydah city is a very small workshop which isn’t wider then 2 meters, the owner Ali Mohammad AlTami (Abu Omar) which he took a career in repairing home appliances & telephone for decades

Janbia a Traditional Wear in the South of Saudi Arabia

If you ever visited Najran city south of Saudi Arabia, it’s recommended to visit AlJanabi Market which is the largest market for selling & crafting Janbia in Saudi Arabia, it’s very traditional to the people from the old times to wear it in normal daily life, basically it’s daggers in different sizes but similar shape with a belt made for it, the prices for Janbia can be from 300 SR up to 20,000 SR in the market, but in some cases it can reach to 80,000 SR depending on how rare the materials used to made or how old it is, the quality depends on the handle, the blade and the gems or the engraving on it. It’s worth mention in addition to the South of Saudi Arabia Janbia is also well known in Yemen and some parts of Oman & UAE. These photos for different Janbia some are regular and some are really old & expensive.

إذا قمت بزيارة مدينة نجران في جنوب السعودية، من المستحسن زيارة سوق الجنابي والذي يعتبر أكبر سوق لصناعة وبيع الجنابي في السعودية وهي تعتبر من التقاليد المتعارف عليها منذ القدم وتلبس في الحياة اليومية بشكل عام. الجنبية بشكل بسيط عبارة عن خنجر بمختلف المقاسات ولكن متشابهة الأشكال ويكون معاه حزام مخصص له، أسعار الجنابي تتراوح ما بين ٣٠٠ ريال سعودي حتى ٢٠ ألف ريال سعودي في السوق، وفي بعض الأحيان بعضها يصل إلى ٨٠ ألف ريال سعودي إعتمادً على أمور عدة من ندرة المواد المصنوعة أو عمر الجنبية، الجودة تعتمد على عدة أمور بشكل رئيسي وهي القبضة، النصل، والأحجار الكريمة أو النقش. ومن الجدير ذكره أن بالإضافة إلى جنوب السعودية تشتهر الجنبية في دولة اليمن وبعض أجزاء دول عمان والإمارات العربية المتحدة. هذه المجموعة من الصور عبارة عدة جنبيات مختلفة البعض منها يعتبر عادي والبعض الآخر يعتبر نادر وثمين.

Day at Abu Sari’s coffee farm

Hello everyone and kicking of the new year with this special post, in my last trip to the south region I was so lucky to to contact & meet up with an owner of a coffee beans farm in Jazan mountains, Salman AlHureisi (Abu Sari) owns not only a coffee farm but a historical buildings which he plans to slowly transforms the place into a tourist resort for anyone who want to a different experience on the mountain, his farm located in AlHasher Mountain located west in Jazan Region & you need about 2 hour drive from Jazan city to reach to it because of the mountain roads, I’ve met Abu Sari at noon on the main road on top of the mountain and then he took me to farm because the road needs a 4X4 car & really good driving skills, when we arrived there the scene were amazing & weather was cool & chilly, I spent the whole day photographing the Abu Sari & his son while doing their normal activities and also I enjoyed the place, calmness & nature. Later on a group of people from AlHasher Mountain office came to visit the farm & observe what have Abu Sari done & will do to the farm specially for the coffee beans part & of course I took the chance to photograph this visit, lastly I’m very grateful for Abu Sari’s hospitality & definitely will come back soon.

مرحبا بالجميع ونبدأ السنة الجديدة مع تدوينة مميزة، في رحلتي الأخيرة لجنوب المملكة كنت محظوظاً لتمكني من التواصل ولقاء أحد مالكي مزارع البن الخولاني في جبال جازان، سلمان الحريصي (أبو ساري) مالك مزرعة الهديهدة وهي ليست مجرد مزرعة للبن الخولاني ولكنها تحتوي على مباني تاريخية والتي جلعت أبو ساري يخطط لتحويل المكان إلى منتجع سياحي لتجربة مختلفة لكل من أراد الزيارة، تقع المزرعة في جبال الحشر الواقعة في غرب منطقة جازان وتحتاج إلى ساعتين قيادة تقريباً من مدينة جازان للوصول إليها والسبب لذلك يعود للطرقات الجبلية، إلتقيت في أبو ساري ظهراً على الطريق الرئيسي في جبال الحشر ومنها ركبت معه بالسيارة للذهاب إلى مزرعته وبسبب وعورة الطريق يتطلب أمر سيارة ذات دفع رباعي وخبرة كافية في هذه الطرقات، عندما وصلنا ذهلت من المشهد الذي رأيته للمزرعة والوادي بالإضافة إلى الأجواء الغائمة ذات حرارة معتدلة، أمضيت معظم اليوم في تصوير أبو ساري وإبنه ساري وأقاربه وهم يقومون بنشاطاتهم المعتادة وكذلك كنت استمتع بالهدوء والطبيعة التي كانت موجودة في ذلك الوقت. في وقت لاحق وصلت مجموعة من مركز جبال الحشر لزيارة المزرعة والاطلاع على ما تحتويه من أشجار البن الخولاني والجهود الذي يقوم بها أبو ساري وبالطبع استغليت الأمر بتغطية هذه الزيارة وتصويرهم، أخيراً أنا جداً ممتن لضيافة أبو ساري الكريمة وبكل تأكيد سأعود قريباً.

Um Khattem the Sadu Maker

In my previous post (Day 83 Nuayriyah – Women’s Market) I published photos from a market and there I met one of the women that was kind to agree photographing her while working on making a dallah case from using Sadu, Um khattem worked from a young age in this craft and it’s in the family from generations, she owns one of the shops (No. 83) in the women market and sometimes her daughter works their if she’s not around. I hope to get back again next winter to photograph her and the market again.

في تدوينتي السابقة (يوم ٨٣ السوق الشعبي النسائي في النعيرية) قمت بنشر صور من أحد الأسوق وهناك إلتقيت بأحد النساء العاملات التي وافقت على أن أقوم بتصويرها وهي تنهي صناعة حقيبة للدلة القهوة والشاي من السدو، أم خاتم عملت من سنة صغير في هذه المهنة وهي موجودة في عائلتها منذ أجيال، لديها محل في السوق الشعبي النسائي (محل رقم ٨٣) وفي بعض الاحيان تقوم إبنتها بالإعتناء بالمحل. أمل كثيراً العودة مرة اخرى في الشتاء القادم لتصويرها وتصوير السوق مرة اخرى.

Al Sunut Forest in Khartoum

In my trip to Sudan I spend my final day at the evening in AlSunut Forest, it’s located east of the White Nile river in the heart of Khartoum State, it’s so big that a lot of people consider it the lung of the city where they spend the weekend relaxing from heavy stress of the city, the people where so simple there and so are families enjoying their time, others are people who came to clean their cars & motorcycle using the river and lastly they love to swim in the river, it’s a beautiful place and it was perfect last photowalk for me in Sudan hopefully I get the chance to be back soon!

في رحلتي إلى السودان أمضيت يومي الأخير في المساء في غابة السنط والتي تقع في قلب ولاية الخرطوم شرق نهر النيل الأبيض، الغابة كبيرة لدرجة أن الكثير من الناس يعتبرونها رئة المدينة التي تتنفس بها حيث يمضون وقتهم بالراحة أثناء العطلة الاسبوعية بعيداً عن ضغوطات المدينة، الناس هناك بسيطون جداً وأيضاً العوائل يستمتعون بوقتهم، هناك اخرون يأتون لكي يقوموا بغسيل سياراتهم ودراجاتهم النارية من النهر وأخيراً هناك من يأتي للسباحة، المكان حقاً جميل وكانت ختامية مميزة لأخر جولة تصوير في السودان على أمل أن أعود مجدداً ربما قريباً!

Al Quran School in Sudan

Back to publish photos from Sudan and it was from a quick visit & unplanned for a school for teaching reading Al Quran in Khartoum, the kids here came from different parts of the country so they live in this school which is usually called Al Dar, I only took a few images so maybe next it will be a complete documentary about them.

عودة لنشر صور من السودان وكانت لزيارة سريعة جداً وغير مخطط لها لدار قرآن في الخرطوم وبالتحديد في مدينة أم دُرمان، الأطفال والمراهقين أتوا للدار من مختلف المناطق في الدولة لذلك هم يعيشون في هذه المدرسة، قمت بإلتقاط القليل من الصور لذلك المرة المقبلة أعتقد بأنني سأقوم بعمل تقرير أكبر من هذا.

في ديسمبر الماضي سافرت في رحلة لتصوير حياة الشارع إلى دولة أثيوبيا، قمت بزيارة العاصمة أديس أبابا، كتبت عن رحلتي بشكل مفصل وانطباعي مع بعض الصور من الرحلة في تدوينة سابقة شاهدها هنا “رحلة الستة أيام إلى أديس أبابا” في هذه التدوينة سأقوم بنشر صور أكثر من الرحلة وأغلبها هي صور من الحياة اليومية في المدينة في المناطق القديمة.
