Faces from Najran – People’s photography

Hello all, in October 2021 I was in a photography trip and I visited AlJanabi Market & the date market in Najran which I published several blog posts like Day 41 – Najran Part 2 back in 2015, and here are some of the peoples who are used to come & spend time in the market and because it was in covid19 time some were still wearing masks.

مرحبا بالجميع، في أكتوبر ٢٠٢١ كنت في رحلة فوتوغرافية وقمت بزيارة سوق الجنابي الشهير وسوق التمور بالقرب منه في مدينة نجران وقمت بنشر عدة تدوينات مثل اليوم ٤١ – نجران الجزء الثاني سابقاً في عام ٢٠١٥، هنا قمت بتصوير بعض الأشخاص الذين اعتادوا المجيء وقضاء الوقت في السوق ولأن ذلك الوقت كانت لاتزال الاجراءات الوقائية ضد الجائحة مفعلة لا يزال بعضهم يرتدي الكمامة.

Faces & eyes in the age of COVID19

 At the end of May and before ending out the long curfew, the government in Saudi Arabia had issued an announcement saying that it’s illegal to go out in public without wearing a mask to cover the the mouth & the nose during the pandemic of COVID19, so I had the thought to document this my way since I like taking portrait from stranger people in the streets and it come cross my mind, what’s it like to capture a portrait without seeing the whole face, what expression will the subject will give, how will it appear & how will effect the viewer? Of course because of the mask there is first thing that will be noticed are the eyes.

في أواخر شهر مايو وقبل انتهاء فترة الحظر الطويلة، أصدرت الحكومة في السعودية قراراً في ظل جائحة فايروس كورونا ينص على أن الخروج من المنزل بدون لبس الكمامة التي تغطي الأنف والفم هو مخالف للقانون، لذا كانت في مخيلتي فكرة لتوثيق ذلك بطريقتي بما أنني أحب إلتقاط البورتريهات لناس غرباء من الشارع وجاء في ذهني، كيف هو الأمر إلتقاط بورترية بدون رؤية الوجه كاملاً؟ ما التعابير التي سيقوم الشخص بإظهارها وكيف ستكون؟ كيف سيكون تأثير الصورة للمشاهد؟ بالطبع مع وجود الكمامة الشيء الأول الذي سيكون بارزاً في الصورة هو العينين.

في حارة أبوالسعود بالقرب من قصر الأمارة القديم في مدينة نجران، أبوعبدالله من سكانها القدامى يملك بيتاً له ولأبناءه بناه قبل ٤٠ عاماً.

In my last trip to the south region I was happy to meet Saad a photographer friend who knew some great places in Abha, Asir and one of the places is a great lookout from AlSawda Mountain, I took some shots for him in the way there, it’s really a great spot!

في رحلتي الأخيرة إلى جنوب المملكة إلتقيت بـ سعد وهو أحد أصدقاء التصوير وكان يعرف بعض الأماكن الرائعة في أبها ومن ضمنها هذا المطل الرائع على جبل السودة، إلتقطت له بعض الصور ونحن في طريقنا إلى هنا، حقيقة كان مكاناً جميلاً!

Closer – Portrait photography

So this is a small series of portraits, I love taking close up portraits, just I think the details in each persons face is unique and interesting not to mention the eyes! As for the processing is just another way of my style showing a dark tone for a black & white portrait just away from the usual boring stuff.

الصور التالية عبارة عن سلسلة من البورتريهات، أنا دائماً أحب إلتقطا بورترية بشكل مقرب جداً، أعتقد أن التفاصيل في وجه كل شخص مميزة ومثيرة للإهتمام بدون أن أذكر العينين بالطبع! وعن المعالجة هي تعبر عن طريقتي في معالجة الصور البورترية بطابع داكن للصور الأبيض والأسود بعيداً عن المعالجة التقليدية المملة.

Layla in a Southern Saudi Dress

About A year ago my lovely daughter Layla started to have a long hair and difficult for her mother to keep at good all the time, so we decided to cut it in order to have a new look & renew her hair but before that I did a photoshoot for her to document that long hair and chose her to wear a Southern Saudi Dress which I bought from my visit to Abha.

Another portraits of an old man which I ran across at the door step of his house, for reasons I can’t really say I only spent like 5 mins with him and was hoping to spend a lot more but sadly this is what I got from one angle.

بورتريهات جديدة لرجل مسن صادفته على باب منزله، لأسباب معينة لم أستطع أن أبقى معه أكثر من ٥ دقائق وتمنيت لو كانت المدة أكثر، للأسف هذا كل ما إلتقطته من زاوية واحدة.

I met this old man at the door of his house, he was smoking and just sitting there like the usual, I really wanted to remember the conversation that took place but sadly I didn’t write it back then. I kept the processing simple and in colors for a change, let me know what you think about it.

قابلت هذا الرجل المسن على باب منزله، كان يقوم بالتدخين والجلوس بشكل معتاد بجانب المنزل، كنت أرغب فعلاً بتذكر المحادثة التي دارت بيني وبينه ولكن للأسف لم أقم بكتابتها في ذلك الوقت. عملت على المعالجة بشكل بسيط وملون من باب التغيير لذا أخبروني برأيكم بها.

Saudi Traveler Sami AlTokhais

Sami AlTokhais is a photographer, traveler & explorer from Saudi Arabia, one day he decided to quit his job & take a one way trip to Guatemala in Latin America and from there his journey didn’t stop for 14 months straight! It took him more then 36,000 km to cross & 21 countries to make this journey possible around South America. I’ve met him once before this journey and had the pleasure to meet him a few days ago after coming back! we talked for more then 3 hours considering that both of us are photographers interested in people’s life! Luckily because I was just getting back from a photography trip & my gear is with me I decided to take a few portraits for him in his favorite cafe in Riyadh, maybe one day when he became really famous he won’t forget about me 😀 ( just kidding ). I won’t say much about the details that we talked about, you will have to wait for Sami for that!

سامي الطخيس مصور، مسافر، ومستكشف من السعودية، ذات يوم قرر سامي أن يستقيل من عمله و يشتري تذكرة ذهاب إلى قواتيمالا في قارة أمريكا الوسطى ومن هناك بدأت رحلته التي لم تتوقف لمدة ١٤ شهر متتالية! قطع خلالها أكثر من ٣٦ ألف كم مروراً ب ٢١ دولة لكي تتحقق رحلته حول أمريكا الجنوبية. قابلته مرة واحدة فقط قبل ذهابه بعدة أشهر وكان لي الشرف بمقابلته مرة اخرى قبل بضعة أيام بعد ان عاد من رحلته الطويلة! لقد تحدثنا لأكثر من ٣ ساعات بإعتبار أننا الاثنان مهتما في التصوير وحياة الناس! من حسن الحظ كنت نفسي عائداً من رحلة فوتوغرافية وكانت عدتي بحوزتي لذلك قررت أن أقوم بإلتقاط عدة صور له في المقهى المفضل لديه بالرياض، ربما يوما ما عندما يكون مشهوراً لن ينساني هههه ( أمزح ). لن أقول شيئاً عن التفاصيل التي تحدثنا بها عن رحلته، سيكون عليكم انتظار سامي إلى تقديم ذلك!

Whiteness Layla – Studio Portrait

For those who know me well, I was and still found of portraits whether it was indoor, outdoor or from the streets. I’m interested in making headshots portraits in landscape view most of the time, I always try to get closer and closer to the face, to the eyes and details. Anyway Layla was and still my favorite subject for the studio and she has grown a lot. I’ve done a lot of portraits of her and these are from the latest photo session.
