Riyadh city is big city and has lots of hidden stories and most of them are located in the center of the city, I heard about an old market that’s called AlHillah Market which has lots of shops specialized in selling music instruments and mostly the Oud which is a very famous instrument in the Arabian Gulf society.
مدينة الرياض مدينة ضخمة ولديها الكثير من القصص المخبأة وأغلبها يقع في وسط المدينة، سمعت عن سوق قديم يسمى بسوق الحلة يحتوي على عدة محلات يبيع الأدوات الموسيقية وبالأخص العود وهي أداة لها شعبية كبيرة في المجتمع الخليجي.

The shops are not visible for those who don’t know it and they can be reach through several door in a limited space building which contains dozens of shops, I talked to some of the sellers and most of them can play the Oud, they force themselves to learn in in order to adapt to the market and the customers who prefer to deal with someone who knows what he sells.
المحلات غير ظاهرة لمن لا يعرفها وأغلبها يمكن الوصول لها بعد دخول أحد مداخل العمارة ذات مساحة محدودة والتي تحتوي على عشرات المحلات بالداخل، تحدثت مع عدة بائعين هناك وأغلبهم يجيدون استخدام العود وقد أجبروا أنفسهم على تعلمها وهي من المتطلبات التي لابد أن يعرفها البائع للزبون الذي يريد شراء العود.
There are lots of Oud makers and some well known names are Mohammed Amin, AlWazirri, AlMarzzoqi, Fathi Aziz and other names, it’s worth noticed that the weight of the Oud is very precise and as for the cost the usual ones cost from SR 200 to SR 3000, but there are rare ones who can get up to SR 5000.
هناك الكثير من الصناع المشهورين لهذه الأداة ومنهم محمد أمين، الوزيري، المرزوقي، فتحي عزيز وغيرهم، بالإضافة أن وزن العود عادة يكون دقيق جداً ويتراوح سعره في ما بين ٢٠٠ ريال إلى ٣٠٠٠ ريال وهناك بعض الأعواد النادرة التي يمكن أن تصل سعرها إلى ٥٠٠٠ ريال ولكن لا تعرض إلا ما ندر.
The name of the market has it’s own origin, according to some this same spot used to be called in a very long time AlHillah Slave Market, but all that changed and they decided to keep the first part of the name for the music market which is more then 50 years old and many of music fans visit this place, also some well known singers has visited the market several times over the past years.
اسم سوق الحلة يعود أصله إلى المسمى الأصلي للمكان وهو حلة العبيد ويقال أنه سابقاً في نفس المكان كان يستخدم لبيع العبيد، السوق يفوق عمره ٥٠ عاماً وهو مقصد لكثير من محبي العزف والموسيقى وأيضاً قصده بعض الفنانون المعروفون عربياً على مر السنين.
Lastly and sadly the market didn’t receive any kind of attention to renew it in the last 20 years.
وأخيراً الجدير بالذكر أن السوق لم يحصل له أي نوع من تجديد على مدار ٢٠ عاماً.
