I’ve just arrived from Kuwait after a 3 days in Documentary photography course, and in the 3rd day there was a field exercise where I was requested to present a quick photo essay using the information & techniques I’ve got from the course! so we went to Al-Mubarakiya souq which was a traditional and famous market in Kuwait. I’ve chosen a traditional cafe which was in the market as my goal to document and here is what I’ve captured.
وصلت مؤخراً من الكويت بعد رحلة دامت ٣ أيام لحضور دورة للتصوير الوثائقي، في اليوم الثالث كان هناك تمرين عملي في الميدان وكان المطلوب مني هو تقديم مقال فوتوغرافي مبسط من تلك الجولة السريعة مستخدماً المعلومات والتقنيات التي حصلت عليها من الدورة. إتجهت إلى سوق المباركية وهو عبارة عن سوق شعبي وقديم في مدينة الكويت وهناك وقع اختياري على مقهى شعبي وقررت أن يكون هو موضوعي الوثائقي الذي أريد تقديمه.
The first scene when you enter the cafe is a picture with the rulers of Kuwait in the historic order
أول مشهد عند الدخول لهذا المقهى هو لوحة معلقة بها صور حكام دولة الكويت بالترتيب التاريخي
The worker corner where all the shisha is getting up and ready
المكان الذي يقوم به العامل بتجهيز الشيشة والمعسل
And he waits for any call from the customers
وينتظر لأي نداء من الزبائن
How tea is served! I mean how simple can it be
طريقة تقديم الشاي! أعني كيف يمكن أن يكون أكثر بساطة
Why look to peoples faces, when what really matters what they doing up close
لماذا النظر في وجوه الناس هناك، ما يهم حقاً هو ما يفعلونه بيديهم وبشكل قريب
The fan, the chairs, the people, the tv, the small flags, the fridge, the sign and much more !
المروحة، الكراسي، الناس، التلفاز، الأعلام الصغيرة، الثلاجة، اللوحة وأكثر كذلك !

In another corner these people were playing cards for more then 2 hours
وفي جهة اخرى من المقهى، هؤلاء كانوا يلعبون لعبة الورق لأكثر من ساعتين
This place is a home for retired people
هذا المكان هو ملجأ لهؤلاء المتقاعدين
This man didn’t know I’m holding a digital camera, didn’t understand the word digital, didn’t get what I was really doing, but still it was a good 15 minute talk with him! His name is Hassan, a retired and not married man who didn’t leave Kuwait for more then 35 years!
هذا الرجل لم يعرف أنني أحمل كاميرا رقمية، لم يفهم كلمة ” رقمية “، لم يستطع أن يفهم ما أفعله حقيقة هنا ولكن كانت محادثة لطيفة استمرت ١٥ دقيقة معه! اسمه حسن، متقاعد وليس متزوج ولم يغادر الكويت لأكثر من ٣٥ سنة!
At his table and almost every table just some tea to pass the time
ما كان على طاولته وتقريبا أي طاولة اخرى مجرد كوب من الشاي ليقضي به الوقت
Other people just watch the news, I mean this is a place to relax but the news is a must, just to stay with this world
وهناك آخرين يشاهدون الأخبار على التلفاز، أعني هذا المكان للاسترخاء ولكن يبدو أن الأخبار شيء لابد منه للبقاء مع هذا العالم وما فيه
On the way out this simple board is to hang bills for customers
في الطريق للخروج توجد لوحة بسيطة تعلق عليها الفواتير الخاصة بالزبائن
The little details that are not important it’s what really makes that place as it is !
التفاصيل الغير المهمة هي التي تجعل ذلك المكان كما هو حقيقة !
