AlZal Market Riyadh – Street photography

Hello, I had the chance to visit Riyadh to attend a calisthenics event for 2 days, luckily for me the morning was free time so I took that time for going on a photowalk and in the 2nd day I went to AlZal Market downtown Riyadh, it was Saturday so the day for market was just getting started and I saw different scenes there and some unique ones. I visited the market more then once and published posts about it like Day 80 Riyadh – AlZal Market . Here are some of the results.

مرحبا، كانت لدي الفرصة لزيارة الرياض لحضور حدث خاص برياضة الكاليسثنكس لمدة يومين، من حسن الحظ كان وقت الصباح وقت حُر لذلك استغليت الفرصة للخروج في جولة تصوير في اليوم الثاني إلى سوق الزل والثميري وسط الرياض، كان يصادف يوم السبت ولهذا كان السوق ينتعش شيئاً فشيئاً من الباعة والزبائن وشاهدت العديد من المشاهد ومنها مشاهد مميزة. قمت بزيارة السوق أكثر من مرة في الماضي ونشرت عدة تدوينات مثل يوم ٨٠ الرياض – سوق الزل. هذه بعض النتائج

The Celebration of Gargee’an – Documentary Photography

The celebration of Gargee’an is a yearly occasion that takes place on the 15th night of the holy month of Ramadan, it’s well known to most of the people of the Eastern region in Saudi Arabia in AlHasa, Qatif & Dammam, plus some other Gulf Countries. It’s a celebration where children goes from house to to house to take candy & sweets, in the last few years the celebration has evolved between the people and started to making it more bigger then usual by making gateway on their houses specially for this occasion also it’s stopped being for children only and everyone from adults men & women are joining in this celebration which is never like how it was in my childhood, this is the first time ever I tried to photograph this celebration because mainly I’m not into documenting events like theses, so I just took the chance to walk around with my children & take shots of these called (gateways) which candy & sweets are being handed to everyone including the passing cars, plus different scenes around. 

قرقيعان العصر الحديث، مناسبة القرقيعان متعارفة عليها بين أهالي المنطقة الشرقية في الأحساء والقطيف والدمام بالإضافة إلى بعض دول الخليج، أسميته بهذا الإسم لأنه وبكل تأكيد ليست مناسبة القرقيعان التي كبرنا بها وعشقناها في طفولتنا وننتظرها على أحر من الجمر في كل عام في ليلة الخامس عشر منتصف شهر رمضان الكريم، سابقاً كان من يتجولون هم الأطفال وكان يطرقون الأبواب بحثاً عن توزيعات الحلويات والمكسرات وغالباً إذا لم يكن دائماً لا يتم التوزيع حتى يبدأ الأطفال أنشودة القرقيعان المشهورة بين أوساطهم وتختلف بعض أبياتها ولكنها جميعاً تتفق على نفس الإيقاع واللحن، أما الان أصبح البيوت فاتحة أبوابها ورافعة أصوات الأناشيد من مكبرات الصوت وباسطة الحلويات والمكسرات والمشروبات وغيرها لتوزيعها ويتجول الصغير والكبير من النساء والأطفال وحتى الرجال للتسابق على هذه التوزيعات دون ترديد هذه الإنشودة، في الواقع هذه المرة الأولى التي أقوم بتصوير القرقيعان منذ أن بدأت التصوير والسبب أنني لست بهاوٍ لتوثيق المناسبات والمهرجانات ولكنني وجدت الفرصة للتجول مع أبنائي وتصوير المشاهد وهذه سلسلة صور لما يمسى عنها (بوابات) يقوم أصحابها بتوزيع مالديهم للجميع وحتى للسيارات المارة بالإضافة إلى بعض المشاهد من حولهم.

Photowalk in old area in Tarout Island

Hello all, it’s been a while since my last blog post and the reason behind that is that I don’t have new photographs to publish, stopping my usual photowalks plus no photography trips for more then a year is the reason due to personal life priorities and the hard part is done, now slowly getting back even though it’s still summer & very hot in Saudi.

Anyway let’s get to this post which was in Tarout Island located west of Qatif in the Eastern Province, I already went to this area many times but the last time was 2 years ago, now a lot of houses were demolished & some just fell apart but the municipality are doing a fine job in preserving what still intact from the old heritage houses.

مرحبا بالجميع، مر بعض الوقت منذ اخر تدوينة قمت بنشرها والسبب يعود إلى أنه ليس لدي صور جديدة لنشرها، التوقف عن الجولات الفوتوغرافية بالإضافة إلى عدم وجود رحلة تصوير لأكثر من عام بسبب بعض الأولويات في حياتي الشخصية ولكن أستطيع القول بأن الجزء الصعب قد انتهى والان عدت للتصوير ببطئ على الرغم من أنه لا يزال فصل الصيف والجو حار في السعودية.

على أي حال هذه التدوينة من جزيرة تاروت الواقعة غرب محافظة القطيف بالمنطقة الشرقية، ذهبت لهذا الحي بالتحديد عدة مرات وهو حي الديرة القديم ولكن كانت اخر زيارة قبل عامين، وجدت بعض المباني قد هدمت والبعض الاخر انهار ولكن أرى أن الجهات المختصة تقوم بعمل لا بأس به في المحافظة على ما تبقى من المباني الأثرية.

Um Khattem the Sadu Maker

In my previous post (Day 83 Nuayriyah – Women’s Market) I published photos from a market and there I met one of the women that was kind to agree photographing her while working on making a dallah case from using Sadu, Um khattem worked from a young age in this craft and it’s in the family from generations, she owns one of the shops (No. 83) in the women market and sometimes her daughter works their if she’s not around. I hope to get back again next winter to photograph her and the market again.

في تدوينتي السابقة (يوم ٨٣ السوق الشعبي النسائي في النعيرية) قمت بنشر صور من أحد الأسوق وهناك إلتقيت بأحد النساء العاملات التي وافقت على أن أقوم بتصويرها وهي تنهي صناعة حقيبة للدلة القهوة والشاي من السدو، أم خاتم عملت من سنة صغير في هذه المهنة وهي موجودة في عائلتها منذ أجيال، لديها محل في السوق الشعبي النسائي (محل رقم ٨٣) وفي بعض الاحيان تقوم إبنتها بالإعتناء بالمحل. أمل كثيراً العودة مرة اخرى في الشتاء القادم لتصويرها وتصوير السوق مرة اخرى.

Hello and once again back to posting from AlHasa, I visited one of the weekly markets which is the Saturday Market in AlHulaylah Village, just before sunrise everyone in the market is already in their usual spot getting their merchandise on the tables or on a small carpet on the street, the market is located in one street mostly, about the people most of them were just happy to see a photographer but overall AlHasa people are all welcoming.

مرحبا بكم جميعاً ومرة اخرة نعود إلى النشر من الأحساء، قمت بزيارة أحد الأسواق الأسبوعية وهو سوق السبت الواقع في قرية الحليلة، قبل شروق الشمس تجد البائعين متواجدين في أماكنهم المعتادة يقومون بتجهيز بضاعتهم وترتيبها على الطاولة والبعض الاخر على قطعة قماش على أرض الشارع، السوق موقعه على شارع واحد داخل القرية غالباً، وعن البائعين والناس كان معظمهم سعيد لرؤية مصور بالسوق ولكن بالإجمال الناس بالأحساء مرحبين.

Al Sunut Forest in Khartoum

In my trip to Sudan I spend my final day at the evening in AlSunut Forest, it’s located east of the White Nile river in the heart of Khartoum State, it’s so big that a lot of people consider it the lung of the city where they spend the weekend relaxing from heavy stress of the city, the people where so simple there and so are families enjoying their time, others are people who came to clean their cars & motorcycle using the river and lastly they love to swim in the river, it’s a beautiful place and it was perfect last photowalk for me in Sudan hopefully I get the chance to be back soon!

في رحلتي إلى السودان أمضيت يومي الأخير في المساء في غابة السنط والتي تقع في قلب ولاية الخرطوم شرق نهر النيل الأبيض، الغابة كبيرة لدرجة أن الكثير من الناس يعتبرونها رئة المدينة التي تتنفس بها حيث يمضون وقتهم بالراحة أثناء العطلة الاسبوعية بعيداً عن ضغوطات المدينة، الناس هناك بسيطون جداً وأيضاً العوائل يستمتعون بوقتهم، هناك اخرون يأتون لكي يقوموا بغسيل سياراتهم ودراجاتهم النارية من النهر وأخيراً هناك من يأتي للسباحة، المكان حقاً جميل وكانت ختامية مميزة لأخر جولة تصوير في السودان على أمل أن أعود مجدداً ربما قريباً!

The Remains of Ad Dirah in Riyadh – Documentary

Soon to be demolished, this phrase cannot be seen in this area but the fact if you are there you will hear the place screaming it! This is what left from the old Ad Dirah buildings near AlZall & AlMaigliah Markets, all the shops and the open markets have been closed & removed to different locations nearby.

قريباً تُزال.. لم تكن تلك العبارة مكتوبة في أي مكان ولكن تلك هي الحقيقة التي ينطق ويصرخ بها المكان، بعض مما تبقى من مباني أحياء الديرة القديمة بالقرب من أسواق الزل والمعيقلية وجميع المحلات والأسواق المفتوحة أغلقت وانتقلت إلى أماكن اخرى متفرقة.

Oldest Mall in Dammam – Documentary

Photos from the oldest mall in Dammam called AlBahooth Market also known in the past as Dammam International Markets. There is actually a sad story about this mall which was after the constructions has finished back in 1990, it has greatly failed because of the bad infrastructure, also the mall was opened which makes it not welcomed because the hot humidity weather most of the year even though the mall is located on a very important St. in the city, then it the investors decided to put all the shops in a public auction which was sadly didn’t have a great outcome for the new owners and for almost 30 years the shops inside the mall remained either closed, deserted or used as a storehouse while the shops on the edges are still in use & in good business over the years from different kinds of merchants. Dammam, Eastern Province – 25 June 2020.

صور من أقدم مجمع تجاري في مدينة الدمام والمعروف بإسم أسواق الباحوث وأيضاً يعرف سابقاً بإسم أسواق الدمام الدولية، هناك في الحقيقة قصة حزينة خلف هذا السوق وهي بعد انتهاء بناء السوق وافتتاحه في عام ١٩٩٠ فشل السوق فشلاً ذريعاً بسبب البنية التحتية السيئة بالإضافة أن السوق مفتوح وهو ما لا يناسب أجواء المدينة الحارة معظم أيام السنة على الرغم من أن المجمع موقعه في شارع الملك عبدالعزيز أحد أهم الشوارع التجارية في المدينة، سريعاً قرر المستثمرون عرض محلات المجمع في مزاد علني كبير وتم بيع معظم المحلات وعلى الرغم من هذه الخطوة إلا أن الفشل والخسارة لحق الملاك الجدد للمحلات ولقرابة ٣٠ عاماً ما زالت المحلات داخل السوق إما مغلقة، مهجورة أو تستخدم كمستودعات بينما المحلات الموجودة في الأطراف الخارجية للسوق ما زالت مستمرة في مختلف النشاطات التجارية. الدمام المنطقة الشرقية – ٢٥ يونيو ٢٠٢٠.

Old Cafe in Qatif – Documentary

Abo Ali rans an old cafe for over 60 years, the small cafe which opens early morning located on one the main streets in Qatif, Saudi Arabia considered to be a well known place among the locals & for some this is their place to meet & catch up for any news, a lot of old men made it a habit to come to this cafe which is manly serve Red Tea for 1 SR in good old fashioned small cups. I tried to show off some the corner of the cafe & Abo Ali while working.

أبوعلي قائم على مقهى قديم منذ أكثر من ٦٠ عاماً، المقهى الصغير يفتح أبوابه في ساعات الصباح المبكرة والذي يقع على أحد الشوارع الرئيسية في القطيف بالمنطقة الشرقية والذي يعتبر هذا المكان معلماً مشهور بين السكان المحليين وبالنسبة للبعض فإن هذا المكان هو للقاء والتحادث ومعرفة اخبار البعض والمجتمع، الكثير من كبار السن اخذت عليهم العادة بالمجيء هنا بشكل شبه يومي والمقهى يقدم الشاي مقابل ريال واحد فقط على الطريقة التقليدية المتعارف عليها في البيوت والمجالس. حاولت أن أظهر بعض زوايا المقهى وعمل أبوعلي في هذه الصور.

Day 40 – Asir

Hello all, finally I am able to post a new post blog to continue my Street Project and very excited to show you the photos I capture it recently at last ! 3 weeks ago I traveled to Asir Region which is located in the south west of Saudi Arabia, I was aiming really at capturing the streets in Abha city in Asir, but I found myself somehow forced to travel along to capture only for the Old Markets in the Region. Since Asir is a Mountain Environment it’s completely different from any other Region in the Kingdom, the weather and the streets are different which gave me good subject to photograph not to mention the kindness of the people too. In this post I will give you a glimpse of my trip there, so photos are from different places scattered and from about 3 days in time, it will be much like a report showing what I saw that represented the street & people’s life ! please be aware that there is more then 100 photo in this page so give some time to load, enjoy it !

مرحبا بكم جميعاً، أخيراً بإستطاعتي كتابة تدوينة جديدة أكمل بها مشروع حياة الشارع الذي بدأته ومتحمس لكي أعرض لكم ما قمت بإلتقاطه مؤخراً ! قبل ٣ أسابيع قمت بالسفر إلى منطقة عسير والتي تقع جنوب غرب المملكة العربية السعودية، كنت أهدف حقيقة إلى تصوير الحياة فقط في مدينة أبها في عسير ولكن وجدت نفسي مجبراً نوعاً ما إلى التنقل حول المدن المتواجدة حول أبها لإلقتاط صور من الأسواق الشعبية والبيوت الموجودة على الجبال. وبما أن عسير هي منطقة جبلية فهي مختلفة تماماً عن أي منطقة اخرى بالمملكة، الطقس مختلف والشوارع مختلفة والتي أعطتني مواضيع جيدة لتصويرها وإبرازها في تدوينتي ولا أنسى طيبة أهلها أيضاً ! في هذه التدوينة سأعرض لكم لمحة من رحلتي هناك لذلك عرض الصور سيكون مختلفاً قليلاً لأنها ستكون من أماكن عدة ومدن مختلفة وفي أوقات مختلفة حيث إلتقطتها في ٣ أيام مختلفة. ستكون مثل التقرير والذي سيعرض لكم ما رأيته من حياة الشارع وحياة الناس ! الرجاء الانتباه بأن هناك أكثر من ١٠٠ صورة في هذه الصفحة لذى كونوا صبورين ، أتمنى أن تستمتعوا بها !ـ
